Asian Living Wage Conference
The Netherlands ministry of Foreign Affairs contracted me to help with the preparations of an Asian regional conference on living wage in Islamabad, Pakistan. I am responsible for overall coordination, content. programme management and report writing. The conference is scheduled to take place on 25, 26 May 2016 and builds upon the European conference on living wage that was held in Berlin in 2013. I coordinate the international team consisting of members of the Dutch, German and Pakistani government as well as GIZ and ILO.
Again the focus will be on wages in the textile sector. Governments, minimum wage boards, brands, NGOs, academics and trade unions from South and South East Asia as well as from Europe and the United States will attend.
A lot has been happening since Berlin and this conference is aimed at taking stock and moving forward to realize better wages for the workers in the garment industry. Closing the gap in supply chains, aligning brands' purchasing practices with social dialogue processes in producing countries.
